Lady Panthers fall to Douglas; will play for third

Posted

Like every other team that's faced Douglas' Lady Bearcats this season, the Lady Panthers came up short.

On Friday evening, the Powell High School girls basketball team fell to Douglas 47-30 in the semifinals of the Class 3A state championship in Casper. Douglas advances to Saturday's title game against Buffalo with an unblemished 26-0 record.

The Powell girls, meanwhile, will now set their sights on claiming third place. They'll battle Star Valley at 10:30 a.m. in a rematch of last weekend's regional tournament, where the Lady Braves came out on top.

Against Douglas, the Lady Panthers trailed from the start, falling behind 12-6 in the first quarter. The squad battled back in the second period to make it 19-15 at the half, but Douglas pulled away in the last two quarters.

PHS junior Rachel Bonander scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the team. Senior Maddy Hanks, junior Aubrie Stenerson and junior Karlie McKenzie added six points apiece, with Hanks and Stenerson each collecting four rebounds. Juniors Jasmyne Lensegrav and Brea Terry rounded out the Powell scoring with two points each.

Douglas' Allyson Fertig, a 6 foot, 4 inch freshman, scored 15 points, collected 13 rebounds and blocked seven shots.

The Lady Panthers' Saturday game against Star Valley will be the rubber match: PHS won a Feb. 3 matchup with the Lady Braves, 63-57, before being edged 43-39 at the Class 3A West regional tournament last week.

The Powell girls advanced to the semifinals by opening their state tournament with a 42-39 win over Worland on Thursday.
