Two Panther wrestlers win titles at state tourney

Posted

Two Powell High School wrestlers won state titles while four others cracked the top five at the Class 3A championships in Casper on Saturday.

PHS junior Reese Karst and sophomore Brody Karhu battled to the top of their brackets in the 138-pound and 152-pound weight classes, respectively. Karst defeated Tristan Kingsley of Torrington in a 5-2 decision, winning a state title for the second straight year. Brody Karhu beat Wyatt Corley of Newcastle by fall to become the champ in his class.

Meanwhile, sophomore Bo Dearcorn grappled his way to third place at 170 pounds and Brandon Thompson, at 285 pounds, took fourth.

At 106 pounds, freshman Emma Karhu took fifth place, becoming the first girl to earn a medal in Class 3A and being just the second female to place at state in Wyoming wrestling history.

Senior Stephen Preator, wrestling at 126 pounds, also battled to a fifth-place finish for the Panthers.

Powell had sat in fifth place as of Saturday afternoon, but jumped up to fourth after the wins by Brody Karhu and Karst. Powell's placement will depend on how the other 3A teams fare in the remaining final matches.

Full tournament brackets are available online.
