The Powell High School winter break has concluded, with the boys swim team, girls basketball, boys basketball and wrestling teams resuming action on Friday.

The boys swim team will host a dual with Lander at 5 p.m. Friday and on Saturday, they’ll host the Gene Dozah Invite with start time at 10 a.m.

Both the girls and boys basketball teams will compete in the Big Horn Basin Classic tournaments starting on Friday. The Lady Panthers will be playing in Cowley with the first game at 10:30 a.m. against Burlington. The Panthers will be playing in Thermopolis and the first game is slated to start at 11 a.m. against Riverside.

The wrestlers will return to the mat at the Bozeman Invitational with start times at 11 a.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.

Boys swimming

The PHS boys swim team will resume action this weekend with two competitions, the first a dual against Lander on Friday night at 5 p.m. and on Saturday will host the Gene Dozah Invite with start time to begin at 10 a.m.

The Panthers thus far have  nine individuals qualified for state. Within Class 3A, Powell has the following swimmers placing in about the top 40:

In the 50 freestyle, Kacey Creed ranks 21st with a time of 25.16; Richard Spann, with a current time of 25.17, is 22nd out of 41 swimmers.

Dillinger Wilkerson is sitting in 25th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 57.28 and 23rd in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:11.67.

Also in the 200 freestyle, Joe Rogers sits in 29th with a time of 2:15.28.

Creed is in third for the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:29.90 and Gavin Asay is 29th with a best time of 6:16.04.

In the 100 backstroke, Spann ranks sixth (1:00.52), Jared Fuller ninth (1:04.51) and Matthew Hobbs 37th (1:12.37).

For the 100 breaststroke, Creed is fifth with a time of 1:10.14), Dillinger Wilkerson is 10th (1:12.79), Jay Cox 19th (1:16.41) and Bryce Hogen 24th (1:17.32).

In the 100 butterfly, Creed ranks 10th (1:01.66), Spann 17th (1:05.53), Asay 22nd (1:07.45) and Ben Cannizarro 44th (1:13.74).

In the 200 IM, Creed is in sixth (2:16.68), Fuller 15th (2:5.96), Asay 25th (2:29.75) and Cox 34th (2:34.68).

For diving, Hudson Wilkerson is sitting in first place with a top score of 249.60 and Hogen ranks fifth with a score of 155.45.

Girls basketball

The Lady Panthers basketball team will compete in Cowley in the Big Horn Basin Classic over the weekend. The first game will be against Burlington at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

If Powell wins, the second game will be at 6 p.m. Friday against the winner of a Greybull/Wind River game. If Powell loses, the second game will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The championship game will be held in Lovell on Saturday at 6 p.m. and Saturday’s game schedule is dependent on Friday’s wins and losses.

So far this season, the Lady Panthers have a 3-1 record. The team is shooting 34 percent from the field (25 percent at the 3-point arc and 38 percent inside the arc) and 59 percent at the charity stripe.

The Lady Panthers are fifth in the state in rebounding and ranked third in defense.

The junior varsity team will also be competing in Cowley, with games at 7:30 p.m. on Friday against Wind River and at 3 p.m. against Rocky Mountain on Saturday.

Boys Basketball

For the boys, the Big Horn Basin Classic will be held in Thermopolis, with the Panthers’ first game scheduled at 11 a.m. on Friday against Riverside (Basin).

If the Panthers win, their next game will be at 6 p.m. Friday, while a loss will slate the Panthers with a 3:30 p.m. game time.

Saturday’s game schedule depends on Friday’s performance.

The Panthers have an overall record of 2-2 this season.

As a team, the Panthers are shooting 33 percent from the field, 24 percent at the arc, 36 percent from inside the arc and 56 percent at the free throw line.

The Panthers are ranked second in the state in rebounding and 13th on defense.

The JV team will also be playing at the Big Horn Basin Classic in Thermopolis with game times at 12:30 p.m. on Friday and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Wrestling

After two competitions this season, the Panthers are ranked third as a team in the state. Star Valley is ranked first and Worland second.

This weekend, the Panther wrestlers will compete in an invitational in Bozeman, Montana. The invite will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday and resume at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Seven PHS wrestlers are ranked in the top seven in the state.

Emma Karhu is ranked fourth at 106 pounds, Michael Maddox is ranked sixth at 120 pounds, Corey Linebaugh is ranked sixth at 132 pounds, Reese Karst is ranked first at 138-pounds and Stephen Preator is ranked sixth at 138-pounds.

At 152 pounds, Brody Karhu is ranked first and Seth Horton fifth. Bo Dearcorn is ranked second at 170 pounds.
