After a successful 2017 campaign, the Lady Panther soccer team handed out its season-end awards Thursday night.
Most inspirational went to Meg Hanlin, most improved to Sadie Wenzel and most valuable to Kayla Atkinson. All of the awards were picked by the players.
Hanlin was voted unanimously as most inspirational.
“She is the inspiration of this team,” said Powell High School head coach Jack Haire. He added that Hanlin stepped up this season not only on the field, but from the sideline, which included getting water bottles.
“She’ll do whatever she needs to do to keep this team motivated and pumped up,” said Haire.
In handing out the most improved award to Wenzel, coach Haire said he and assistant coach Stan Hedges were “just super excited” and “very proud.”
Haire said Wenzel came into the season with “young experience” and by the end was “on fire” and “unstoppable on defense.”
Senior Kayla Atkinson was voted most valuable.
Atkinson, who plays left side mid, ended the season tied with freshman Kayla Kolpitcke for most goals scored in the season.
“She was strong on the left side,” said Haire. He added that Atkinson could have graduated at semester, but did not so she could finish her high school soccer career
The coaches also picked Jaya Smith as offensive VIP and Joey Haire as defensive VIP.
At the awards banquet, coach Haire also extended a thank you to his coaching staff: Hedges and volunteer coaches Amy Kawano and Bret Hanlin.
