PHS tracksters finish strong at home

Posted

A half-dozen Panther discus throwers crammed the leaderboard by filling six of the top nine spots to headline a successful Saturday at the L.A. Kohnke Invitational.

Two Powell High School competitors qualified for the state meet during the weekend home invite — Zach Easum in discus and Maddy Hanks in the pole vault — while both the 4x100 relay team and pole vaulter Garret Henderson improved on their previous state-qualifying times.

The PHS boys won the meet while the girls took third.

“I thought our kids did a great job; they competed really really well,” said Powell head coach Scott Smith. “On the track the times weren’t particularly great because of that wind, but the kids just competed against really good kids very well. And then over in the field events, we had some real good performances there.”

In the field events, six boys posted personal best throws for the season and cracked the top nine amid 48 competitors who threw for a marked distance.

“They all threw really really well,” said Smith.

Leading the PHS throwers was Easum, who finished second with a throw of 138 feet, 3 inches. That throw also prequalified him for state.

Mason Olsen finished behind Easum with a throw of 135 feet 2 inches for a third place finish and Shay Dillon followed in fourth with a throw of 121 feet. Meanwhile, Ryan Good placed seventh with a 118 feet, 9 inch throw, Caden Lynn came in eighth at 116 feet, 10 inches and Dalton McMillan finished ninth by throwing 113 feet, 2 inches.

For the girls, pole vaulter Maddy Hanks prequalified for state by clearing 9 feet, 3 inches. Garret Henderson

improved his prequalified jump from 12 feet, 7 inches the previous weekend to 13 feet, 1 inch.

Also improving on a previous prequalified time was the 4x100 relay team comprised of AJ Lewis, Mason Olsen, Paige Gann and TJ Abraham. They improved their run time to 45.15 seconds.

JuliaKay O’Neill was just on the cusp of prequalifying in the 400 meter while taking first place with a time of 1:03.66.

“Again close, but with that wind, just wasn’t quite able to pull it off,” Smith said. “But it was a good run.”

As a team, the boys led the pack with 191 points. Coming in second place was Cody with 130 points, Lovell placed third with 117.5 and Worland fourth with 86.

The girls team placed third out of nine teams with 108.75 points. Riverton claimed first place with 173.5 points and Cody finished second with 124 points.

Demonstrating some enthusiasm, coach Smith said members of his track team were asking to be entered to compete in more events as the day progressed.

About an hour after the invite had concluded, a hail storm pummeled Powell.

Overall, coach Smith said he thought the invite “ran real well with the forecast; I was really happy to get the whole meet in before the hail hit.”

The next invite for the Panthers is to head to Worland on Thursday. The invitational will start at 2 p.m. This invite is a change to the schedule, as originally Powell was to be competing in Billings.
