Gomes, Marlow lead way for NWC

The last time the Northwest College women’s basketball team squared off against Dawson Community College, the Lady Trappers lost a nail-biter at the buzzer, 71-69, at DCC.

Fast-forward a month, and it was time for a little payback. Showing very little rust coming off the long holiday break, the Lady Trappers (9-7) used a fast start and tenacious defense to avenge their earlier loss, blowing out DCC (12-6) at the Cabre Gym, 96-52.

“We definitely had some revenge issues going on,” said freshman Kira Marlow. “I think our defense was the game-changer. We had high energy on defense, trying to force turnovers. That led to fastbreaks and more points.”

The Lady Trappers scored the first eight points of the game, including six by Julynne Silva, a freshman post player from Barcarena, Brazil. The Lady Buccaneers would battle back, pulling within three points before NWC’s defense ended the run. Leading by just seven at the end of the first period, 22-15, the Lady Trappers exploded in the second, outscoring DCC 23-4 to head into the locker room with a dominating 45-19 lead at the half.

“I’m very pleased with the girls’ effort; they played so hard defensively,” said NWC head coach Janis Beal. “They really got after it, got some tips and steals which allowed us some easy baskets. This was a great game coming back from break.

“You never know what you’re going to get; we’ve had three weeks off, and you always wonder how that first game back is going to go,” Beal added. “It’s a great momentum-builder heading into region play.”

The second half began the same way the first half ended, with NWC dominating on both ends of the floor. The defense continued to shine, with Dallas Petties and Alexi Payne grabbing six defensive rebounds apiece to lead the Lady Trappers; Petties would finish with nine boards for the game.

Domenica Gomes stayed busy on both ends of the floor, grabbing four steals and dishing off six assists to go along with her 16 points.

“We really did a great job of getting hands on balls, getting tips; I just really liked the defensive pressure,” Beal said. “It was definitely one of Domenica’s better games, I was really pleased with her effort. She did a good job of scoring when it was there, but she also led the team with six assists.”

“That’s another thing I was pleased with — was the 19 assists,” Beal added. “We did a good job of moving the ball.”

With the game out of reach, Beal was able to empty her bench, giving all her players valuable minutes of experience. The entire roster found their way onto the stat sheet, scoring at least a point. Turnovers were a sore spot, however, an aspect Beal said the team will definitely need to work on.

“We had a few mental errors with turnovers,” Beal explained. “It was a fast-paced game, we had a lot of possessions and that resulted in 20 turnovers. We just need to understand the flow of the game and be able to take a step back and slow down when we need to.”

NWC shot 77 percent on free throws, 50 percent on 3-point shots and 51 percent from the field, compared to DCC’s 59 percent on free throws, 28 percent on 3-point shots and a dismal 25 percent from the field.

The Lady Bucs had 24 turnovers to NWC’s 20.

“I’m very pleased with how our girls responded after losing to Dawson at the buzzer the first time around,” Beal said. “This was a good game for us.”

Four of NWC’s starters scored in double-digits, led by freshmen Domenica Gomes and Marlow with 16 and 14 points respectively. Dani McManamen and Julynne Silva finished with 10 points apiece. McManamen practically lived at the free throw line, with all 10 of her points coming at the charity stripe.

Rounding out the top scorers for the Lady Trappers, Jessie Lessard scored nine points, Jessica Lohrenz and Maddy Johnson each finished with eight and Petties chipped in seven. Lauren Hinckley, Lohrenz and Johnson each hit a pair of 3-pointers to lead the team.

Petties was high rebounder with nine, followed by Marlow with seven and McManamen and Alexi Payne pulling down six. NWC finished with 45 rebounds as a team.

The women were set to play Casper College in Casper Wednesday evening, but weather pushed the game to 5 p.m. today (Thursday). They return home on Saturday against Gillette College at 2 p.m.

The Lady Trappers then play at Little Big Horn College Wednesday, Jan. 18.
