Lose heartbreaker to Dawson, beat Yellowstone Christian and Elite

The Northwest College women’s basketball team bounced back from a loss at the buzzer with two decisive wins over the past week.

The Lady Trappers were edged 71-69 by Dawson Community College on Tuesday, Dec. 6, then defeated Yellowstone Christian College, 64-41, on Wednesday, Dec. 7 and pounded Basketball Elite 100-54 on Saturday.

After the narrow loss to Dawson, NWC head coach Janis Beal said the coaching staff emphasized just how important the little things are. Little things such as a missed free throw in the first quarter mean just as much as in the fourth quarter as a missed box out that led to a rebound — and could be the difference for a win.

“When you lose by two, it was one play here or there that could have made the difference,” Beal said.

NWC had one of its worst performances from the free throw line on the season, shooting 59.5 percent; Dawson shot 69.7 percent from the free throw line.

Dawson out-rebounded NWC 44-40 and NWC had 22 turnovers to Dawson’s 24.

But despite the statistics, the Trappers were only one play away from winning the game.

“I felt like we played with a lot of effort, but we really just didn’t make plays when we needed to,” said Beal

Northwest shot 12.5 percent from the 3-point line and 40.4 percent from the field. Dawson shot 31.6 percent from the 3-point line and 34.4 percent from the field.

Four players scored in the double digits, with Kira Marlow leading at 15 points. Dani McManamen followed with 13, Dallas Petties 12 and Julynne Silva 11.

McManamen led in rebounds with eight, including seven defensive and one offensive. Following close behind, with a total of seven, were Petties and Silva.

After the loss to Dawson, the Trappers turned around to play Yellowstone Christian College the next evening.

It was a close, back-and-forth game until about mid third quarter, when NWC pulled away for the 64-41 victory.

“Kira (Marlow) did a great job attacking the basket, and kind of getting us going,” said Beal.

Marlow led with 17 points and Domenica Gomes added 10.

The game in Billings was the Lady Trappers’ sixth game in nine days and fifth straight on the road.

“(I) was pleased that they came out and got the win,” Beal said.

Northwest shot 71.4 percent on free throws, 16 percent on 3-point shots and 36.8 percent from the field.

Yellowstone Christian College made 65 percent of their free throws, shot 40 percent on 3-pointers and 34.3 percent from the field.

The NWC women then had a two-day break from games before playing Basketball Elite on Saturday.

“It’s kind of a fun game, in the sense that we had a lot of alumni that game,” said Beal.

It was a tough game for the Basketball Elite team as — with three players bowing out that morning — the squad had few available substitutes with only seven players.

NWC won 100-54.

“It was a good game to kind of work on the fundamentals,” said Beal. “Second half, we really worked on our offense.”

For high scorers, Marlow had 26 points with 18 of those in the first quarter.

“She did a great job,” Beal said of Marlow.

Other high scorers included Jessie Lessard with 14, Maddy Johnson with 11 and Jessica Lohrenze with 10.

Lohrenze led in rebounds with eight — six on defense and two on offense. Following right behind with seven was Silva.

Northwest shot 70 percent from the free throw line, 50 percent from the 3-point line and 54.1 percent from the field.

Basketball Elite shot 65 percent from the free throw line, 40 percent on 3-point shots and 34.3 percent from the field.

The NWC women’s basketball team is now on its Christmas break. The squad will resume action at home on Jan. 7, looking for some revenge against Dawson Community College at 2 p.m.
