Team effort lifts NWC women’s basketball squad on Tuesday

Production from the entire lineup carried the Northwest Trapper women’s basketball team to a 63-46 win over the Rocky Mountain College JV Tuesday in Powell.

Every team member scored points on a night in which the Trappers shot 92.3 percent from the free throw line.

“I think this was a good game, especially where we could get everybody in, get some minutes and kind of get back in the flow,” said Janis Beal, head coach.

The women had four days off over Thanksgiving. The first practice after the break was on Monday.

Beal described the first half as a time to shake the rust off.

“It takes a little bit to get that feel back,” said Beal. “I was pleased to see the second half a lot better.”

The Lady Trappers outscored the Bears in each quarter, leading 12-10 after the first and 29-26 at halftime. They upped the margin to 48-36 after the third period and won going away 63-46.

Kira Marlow was high scorer of the game with 13 points, and Dallas Petties added 11. They were the only two players to score in double figures.

However, every player put points on the board.

Julynne Silva had seven points, followed by Charri McArthur with six. Jessica Lohrenz, Mattie Creager, Jessie Lessard and Dani McManamen each tallied four points. Maddy Johnson and Lauren Hinckley each had three, and Domenica Gomes and Alexi Payne scored two each.

“It really is good that everyone can contribute,” said Beal.

From the line, Northwest shot 92.3 percent. For 3-point shots, the team was 16.7 percent and overall 35.8 percent from the field.

Every team member also got at least one rebound.

Lohrenz led with 10, six offensive and four defensive. Marlow collected seven and Silva six. Three others had five each.

“We don’t have the same people every game step up; it could be anybody out of the 12,” said Beal. “It really is a good group.”

As a team, there were a total of 20 turnovers for the Trappers, while the Bears had 19.

Rocky Mountain shot 83.3 percent from the free throw line, 15 percent from the 3-point line and 26.9 percent overall.

The NWC women’s basketball team will travel to Scottsbluff, Nebraska to play Western Nebraska College at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

The Lady Trappers will turn around to play in Gillette, for the Gillette College Tournament, on Friday and Saturday. On Friday they play Yellowstone Christian College at 6 p.m. and Carson Community College at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

On Tuesday Dec. 6, the NWC basketball team will travel to Glendive, Montana, to play Dawson Community College at 5:30 p.m. And on Wednesday they play in Billings against Yellowstone Christian College at 5:30 p.m.
