Panther football claims another conference win

Powell High School’s football team earned a second straight conference win on Friday, beating Worland on the road, 21-14.

Combined with the previous week’s win over Star Valley, Powell moved into the No. 4 seed in the West, bumping Worland out of a top five ranking.

“Worland certainly came out swinging, as they typically do in this matchup,” said PHS head coach Chanler Buck. “I was proud of the composure displayed among our boys, and their ability to control the game through their defensive execution and ability to run the ball on offense.”

Defensively, Brooks Asher led the Powell defense with nine assisted tackles and three unassisted tackles — with two of those tackles resulting in a loss of yardage for Worland. Following close behind Asher was T.J. Abraham. Abraham had eight assisted tackles and three unassisted tackles, with one of those tackles resulting in a loss of yardage for the Worland offense.

Offensively, the two teams were closely matched with Powell picking up 395 total yards and 15 first downs and Worland getting a total of 343 yards with 10 first downs.

For Powell’s offense, Mason Olsen gained 122 yards on 10 rushes and completed six passes for 67 yards. Abraham had a good offensive game as well with 25 rushes for 152 yards plus 42 receiving yards.

“We’ve certainly got some areas that will direct our focus for improvement this week,” said Buck. “Special teams are an area that we put a lot of stock into. We have yet to see the level of our expected execution in that aspect of the game.”

With the win over Worland, Powell is now 2-1 for the conference and 3-3 for the season. There are only two games left in the regular season, both of which are conference games. On Friday, Powell will host Jackson at 6 p.m. A match-up with Cody follows on Oct. 21.

“This week is as important as any,” Buck said. “Our kids and community will have a tendency to want to discuss the postseason outline, or Cody week. It’s my job to see that no one looks beyond this Jackson squad and our focus to become a better team in the next five days.”
