Saturday ‘Smashtoberfest’ to fund local scholarship

Posted

The last demolition derby of the season will be held at the Park County Fairgrounds on Saturday.

Based on the number of competitors from the previous two years, about 20 cars are expected to compete in Smashtoberfest.

Smashtoberfest is one of several events put together by the H&G Foundation throughout the year, where the collective proceeds are donated to a pre-chosen group or cause.

This year, the proceeds are going toward a scholarship. The one-time scholarship is available to any senior graduating from an area high school in May of 2017 — such as Powell, Cody or Lovell — and who plans on attending Northwest College.

“We are just trying to raise money to help someone go to school,” said Brock Ninker, board member of the H&G Foundation.

In the previous two years, the proceeds went to help smaller organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity and the Boys and Girls Club.

Next year, the H&G Foundation is making plans to do something to help veterans.

The H&G Foundation consists of four board members: Brock Ninker, June Dunn, Mark Senn and Sasha Ninker. The H&G stands for Hansel and Gretels.

“It’s been a pleasure to be able to do this for the community,” said Brock Ninker. “Give something for the community to do, an event for people to come and watch, and also to benefit a young individual for their education.”

Throughout the year, the H&G Foundation put on a series of events: the Demolition Derby and Bump ‘N Run Stock Car Races during the Park County Fair, two mud drag events — one around Mother’s Day called Mudder Day and a recent Northwest Wyoming Redneck Mudfest — plus other Bump ‘N Run races. All events took place at the Park County Fairgrounds.

The members of the H&G Foundation were not only responsible for the planning and organizing, but also for setting up the track, ticket sales and cleaning up the facility — including tidying the grandstands and restrooms after the events concluded.

Gates will open for the third-annual Smashtoberfest at 4 p.m., with the event starting at 5 p.m. Tickets are available on a first-come first-served basis, with both box and grandstand tickets offered.

Food and beverages will be available for spectators. Hawg Heaven and Country Kitchen will also be providing their services.

Those interested in competing can register on the day of the event. Cash prizes will be awarded Saturday night.

Sponsors for all events put together this year by H&G Foundation include: Pepsi Cola, McIntosh Oil, Powell Tribune, Hansel and Gretels, Woodward Tractor, Auto Plumbers Exhaust, 1260 AM Radio, Aldrich Lumber, Fremont Motors, Napa of Powell, JP Dunn Digital Media, First Bank of Wyoming, O’Reilly Auto of Powell and Bighorn Radio Network.

“We couldn’t do any of this without them,” Brock Ninker said.
