Jake Clark’s Mule Days Rodeo showcases mule versatility
Ralston’s population easily tripled for the annual Jake Clark’s Mule Days rodeo on Saturday as fans and competitors from across the country rallied for a different type of rodeo — one entirely made up of mules.
Having a rodeo with mules instead of horses changes the competition quite a bit since they have a donkey’s work ethic combined with a horse’s athleticism. Although the phrase “stubborn as a mule” is common, about the only time the mules showed any stubbornness was when they were asked to do something a bit more western than a trail ride — such as dragging a kid who’s clinging to a large piece of hide around the arena as fast as they can.
To add an extra bit of chaos, the arena was turned into a dust storm as multiple cows were chased down to see who could milk one the fastest in the wild cow milking event.
Of course, between the moments of wild entertainment, mules were utilized in traditional rodeo events such as barrel racing, team roping and pole bending.
