Warner wins Milward Simpson Award

Posted

And the awards just keep rolling in.

A few weeks since her outstanding senior track and field season ended, Powell’s Anissa Warner was named as the female Milward Simpson Award winner at the awards banquet Saturday in Cody.

It was the 41st presentation of the honor, which invites the top five nominees, male and female, to the banquet.

Warner had won the high jump with a record-setting leap during the indoor state championships with the Cody program, before taking it up a notch with Powell during the outdoor season.

With the Panthers, she won the high jump in all her meets this season, including state, where she then won championships in both the triple and long jumps.

Milward Simpson played professional baseball in his younger years, before becoming a lawyer and politician in the State and U.S. Senate and then founding this award in 1975.

“I had to Google it because I didn’t know what it was,” Warner said. “My parents knew about it for about two weeks before I found out.”

Her story for finding out proved as funny as the award is prestigious.

“When I got the letter, I opened it but didn’t read it because my mom called me to help her with something,” Warner said. “I left it on the counter and forgot about it. My parents then asked if I was proud of it and I didn’t know what they were talking about.”

Once she got a chance to read the letter in full, Warner was then able to appreciate the honor.

“I’m just so thankful to be considered even close to the caliber of the other people nominated,” she said. “It was really great to even be nominated and is an amazing way to end my high school career.”

Correction:

Warner was, in fact, an award winner, as the 10 finalists, five boys and five girls are considered honored with the award.

But, among those 10, one boy and one girl are then named for the top award, which went to Sheridan’s Robbi Ryan and Gillette’s Zach Taylor.

So while Warner didn’t actually receive the ultimate honor, she was a finalist and therefore an award winner.

And as she had said, “I’m just so thankful to be considered even close to the caliber of the other people nominated.”
