Pioneers can’t level with Lovell

The third time is the charm, as the adage goes, but it wasn’t quite the case in the Powell Pioneers 2-1 loss to the Lovell Mustangs Saturday evening.

Playing on neutral grounds, at Cowley’s Rocky Mountain High School field, the two teams were meeting for the third time in 10 days.

On June 8, Powell lost both ends of a doubleheader at home by 15-2 and 3-2 scores, while missing some key bats in its line-up.

But even with their full compliment of hitters that night, the Pioneers couldn’t solve Lovell starter Trey Dickerson and reliever Riley Hill.

“Every time we face him (Dickerson), we think we’re going to crush him,” Carson Asher said. “But then we try too hard to crush him and we end up hitting fly balls.”

This was predominantly the case over Dickerson’s 6.1 innings of work, though the Pioneers did pepper him with eight hits and four walks, but couldn’t turn those into any crooked numbers on the scoreboard.

The Mustangs got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out, RBI double by Wyatt Horrocks, scoring Justin Bacus, for a 1-0 lead.

From there, starter Asher and relievers Teagan Cordes, Ben Jackson, Kaden Moore and Tyler Feller held Lovell scoreless into the ninth.

The offense, meanwhile, evened things up in the top of the sixth.

Cordes raked a line drive deep to left field for a lead-off triple and Moore brought him plateward with a sacrifice fly.

Feller also drew a walk and Luke Washington singled in the inning, but Hill came on and got out of it with a double play to keep things even at 1-1.

But then, after goose eggs were traded in the seventh and eighth innings, Lovell got the decider in the bottom of the ninth.

Bacus singled to center and worked his way into scoring position as Ezra Andreason struck out the next two hitters.

But a chopper off of Horrocks’ bat found its way through the left side of the infield, bringing Bacus around for the win.

Now 3-9 on the season, Powell is scheduled to stay local this week, with a doubleheader at home against the Cody Cubs today (Tuesday) at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., before facing Cody’s “B” team Friday on the road.

Saturday sees Sheridan coming to town for a twin-bill at 1 and 3:30 p.m.
