PHS golf closes out spring season

The Panther boys golf team wrapped up its spring practice season at last Saturday’s four-team tournament in Worland.

Taking on the host Tigers, along with Buffalo and Lander, Powell got its last bit of work in under un-spring like conditions and will look forward to continuing to improve over the summer months.

Worland’s Trey Massey played his home course as if he knew it all too well, carding a 71 for top individual honors for the day, while the host Tigers tallied the low team score as well.

Hunter Barnette paced the Panthers with an even 100 for the round, with Treven Keeler just two shots back at 102.

But even with these two solid scores at the top end of his team, head coach Troy Hildebrand sees Saturday’s results with a bit of melancholy.

“Hunter has done a nice job of improving in each of the three tournaments he was able to play,” he said. “Unfortunately, it looks like he and his family will be moving before next fall.”

But while likely losing Barnette’s talents, Hildebrand could be buoyed by Keeler’s play.

“He stayed right in the range he’s been in this spring, but the real positive is that he finished out his last nine holes with a personal best 45,” Hildebrand said. “That was a nice way for him to close out the season and hopefully will springboard him into playing a lot this summer.”

The two Austins, Layton and Asher, were nearly as similar as their first names Saturday, with Layton bringing in a score of 115 and Asher coming in with a 116.

“Austin (Layton) has come a long way since last fall and I know that he wants to keep improving,” Hildebrand said. “Being able to put some more time in will have a big influence on how he comes out next fall for his senior season.”

Putting the work in is one thing the head coach doesn’t worry about with Asher, who was the lone Panther able to play in each tournament of the spring season.

“This was a great experience for him and showed him a number of courses that he hadn’t seen before,” Hildebrand said. “He has worked hard and improved a great deal over the last two years and I hope he’ll come back in the fall ready to go.”

And while he hopes for his golfers coming back with many more rounds logged on the course over the summer months for their own improvement, Hildebrand has another big reason for wanting his guys in top form this fall.

“We are hosts for the 3A State Tournament in September, which is an opportunity we get once every 10-12 years,” he said. “It would be nice to be able to put our best foot forward and play well as a team. Time on the course this summer is the first step towards making that a possibility.”
