PHS soccer stopped at Star Valley, Jackson

Posted

The Panthers of the pitch closed out their regular season over the weekend, playing matches at Star Valley Friday and Jackson Hole Saturday, but came away with little to show for it.

The Powell girls fell by a 5-0 score while the boys saw a second half lead disappear in a 3-2 loss.

In the match, Powell came in shorthanded with Shattuck Swenson and John Stutzman out, and saw Star Valley draw first blood for a 1-0 lead.

The Panthers tied it when, after a hand ball call, Trey Ouellette converted a penalty kick.

Powell went on top in the second half with Oullette gathering a rebound off a T.J. Abraham shot and powered it in for a 2-1 lead.

“We then had a defensive collapse that allowed two goals in about a five-minute span,” head coach Travis Rapp said. “One was a shot to the near post and the second on a penalty kick. We played well, but that ended the scoring.”

Unfortunately, that contest also saw Ouellette get sidelined with a hip injury and Owen Dent limp off with an injured knee, knocking two more starters out of the rotation for the Jackson match — a 9-0 loss, while the Powell girls were downed 8-1 by the Lady Broncs .

“We just couldn’t overcome missing four starters against them,” Rapp said. “We are hopeful everyone will heal up and be healthy for Friday’s game.”

Friday, May 20, will be the playoff qualifying match for both Panther squads as they will travel to Worland and each face Newcastle at 5 p.m.

“We have not played them or seen them play,” Rapp said. “They were the only 3A team that wasn’t at the Green River tournament.”

The Lady Panthers did see Newcastle at the Worland tournament in mid-April and played a close contest before taking a 1-0 loss.

Losses would end the season on the spot for Powell, while a boys win would send them to the first round of the state tournament against Lander on Thursday, May 26.

A win for the  Lady Panthers would have them then facing Torrington on May 26.
