Senior sets high goals for final prep season

Powell High School senior Chance Karst has his wrestling future figured out before his final season as a Panther has even started.

Karst signed his National Letter of Intent on Nov. 16 to wrestle for Chadron State College — a Division II school in Chadron, Nebraska.

For Powell’s two-time individual state champion, it’s the end of a long journey that always led to Chadron.

“I have wanted to go there ever since I was a little kid and just starting to go to wrestling camps and bigger tournaments,” Karst said. “My first wrestling camp was in Greybull and Brett Hunter, the coach for Chadron, was there. I got to know Brett pretty well at a young age, then going to the Chadron camp from my freshman to my senior (year) every summer he always talked to me about wrestling at Chadron.”

Karst won the Wyoming Class 3A title at 132 pounds his junior year, at 120 pounds his sophomore year and was the runner up at 106 pounds his freshman season. Karst said he expects to redshirt as a college freshman, but will eventually compete at 133 or 141 pounds as an Eagle.

PHS head coach Nate Urbach wrestled at Chadron and has developed a strong relationship with Hunter and the Eagles program. Former Panther Zach Thompson signed with CSC last year.

“Coach Urbach had a huge role in me going to Chadron,” Karst said. “He went to college in Chadron and he was the one who introduced me to coach Hunter when I was young.”

Karst said his parents, Emilee and Rusty, who stood behind him as he signed his letter of intent, supported him 100 percent in his decision.

“They would be happy anywhere that I went just as long as I’m going to college,” Karst said.

The high school wrestling season officially begins on Monday, and Karst isn’t easing in to his final high school season. He’s hitting the mat, and plans on hitting it hard.

“I want to go undefeated my senior season,” Karst said. “I was so close my junior year, going 50-1, my only loss was to a state champ from Montana. I want to win state and Ron Thon again.”

With his collegiate future decided, Karst can wrestle — and win — without distraction.

“As for preparing me for college, it's going to be fun. I don’t have to worry about college recruiters watching anymore. I can just go out, wrestle and have fun with it,” he said. “That’s a great thing about signing early, there is no more pressure about trying to impress college recruiters. I am super excited about wrestling this year and hopefully ending the season with my third state title and a fifth team state title, that would be the cherry on top of a fantastic year.”
