A cloud of smoke and a pile of popped balloons were all that was left after an explosion of rapid gunfire at the Park County Fairgrounds May 16-17 during the third annual Shoshone River Shootout.
Cowboys and cowgirls darted around the arena on horseback in randomly selected patterns, firing at 10 balloon targets with single-action .45s, loaded with black powder blanks, as they competed for the fastest times with the most accurate shots.
The most skilled shooters from across the region walked away from this Wyoming Desperados mounted shooting club competition with a collective $4,000 in awards.
Among the weekend’s winners were two sharpshooters, meaning they didn’t miss any targets that day. On May 16, Nicole “Scooter” Singbeil of Powell finished in 68.01 with no misses.
Jessie Royer of Darby, Montana, who finished fourth in this year’s Iditarod dog-sled race in Alaska, was May 17’s sharpshooter with an official time of 70.772.
Adult and senior shooters are placed into one of six levels. Level one is for novice and beginning competitors, and shooters move up based on performance. Level six is world-champion caliber. The highest level shooter last weekend was Royer in level four.
The following are the results from the Shoshone River Shootout. The next local competition will be the Battle in the Basin in August to benefit the Park County Boys and Girls Club.
