Powell Middle School boys and girls track enjoys success at Powell invite

Behind a total of nine first-place performances Saturday, the Powell Middle School seventh and eighth grade boys track and field teams earned team victories at the Powell Invitational at Powell High School.

The seventh-grade Cubs took the eight-team meet with 141 points, cruising past runner-up Cody (103). Brody Karhu had a big day for Powell, placing first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.61 seconds and helping the Cubs’ 4x400 relay team (along with Jay Cox, Tucker Veal and Colin Queen) place first in 4:39.46. Karhu also took third in the 100 with a time of 12.82. His teammate, Caden Lynn, placed fifth in 13.15. In the 200, Psalm Wolfe ran to fourth place in 27.91.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Wyatt Henderson used a time of 18.30 to finish second, while Dylan McMillan placed fourth in 18.90 and Alexis Reynoso was a close fifth with an 18.93. The Cubs crowded the 200 hurdles as Cox finished second in 31.54, Bryce Hogan took fourth in 33.45 and Aidan Smith finished fifth in 33.48.

Queen had a good day in distance running, cruising to victories in the 800 (2:34.41) and 1,600 (5:39.91) runs. Queen was also third in the pole vault after reaching a height of 8 feet. Following Queen was teammate Ethan Asher, who also reached 8 feet but in more attempts.

PMS’ 4x200 relay team (Wolfe, Zach Griffin, Reynosa and Hogan) took second in 2:01.52, while its 4x100 team (Lynn, Ryan Good, Asher and Dacen Phister) earned third in 54.02.

Wyatt Henderson enjoyed a third-place finish in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 6 inches. He also took third in the triple jump with a leap of 29-9. In the shot put, Good placed fifth with a heave of 30-1.5.

In the eighth-grade standings, Powell won with 125 points, while Worland was a distant second with 88. Jacob Harrison enjoyed a successful meet after posting a victory in the 200 (25.80) and having a hand in the Cubs’ 4x200 relay victory. Harrison, Dalton McMillan, Preston Quarles and Kanyon Gann posted a 1:53.33 for the win. Harrison also finished second in the pole vault after reaching 8-6. His teammates Reece Hackenberg (8-0) and Brinson Cozzens (7-6) took third and fourth, respectively.

In the 400, Joe Rogers was the runner-up with a time of 58.84, while Dalton McMillan took third in 59.00. In the 800, Alan Merritt was second with a time of 2:28.22 before claiming the 1,600 with a time of 5:34.70. In the 100, Quarles finished fifth in 13.13.

In other relay action, the Cubs placed fourth in the 4x100 after Hackenberg, Kaelan Groves, Colby Warner and Paulino Perez ran a 54.81. The 4x400 team of Jayden Yates, Rogers, Aidan Hunt and Merritt placed third in 4:42.77.

In the 100 hurdles, Gann finished third in 17.36.

In the long jump, Gann reached 15-3 for a win before sailing a distance of 37-1.5 for a victory in the triple jump. Quarles finished fifth in the long jump at 14-2. In the discus, Dalton McMillan’s tos of 110-5 was good for third, while Perez placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 33-4.75.

Girls teams place first and second

The Powell Middle School girls nearly duplicated their counterparts success Saturday, as the eighth-grade girls claimed a win with 121 points (Riverton second with 88) and the seventh-grade Cubs finished second with 106 (the Cody seventh-graders were victorious with 135 points).

Five Powell eighth-graders earned wins while the seventh-grade Cubs’ earned a win in the 4x200 relay and the high jump.

At the eighth-grade level, Caitlyn Miner had a huge day with three victories that included two personal records. Her 100 hurdles time of 17.73 was a personal best and also was good for a win. She also posted a best time of 31.69 in the 200 hurdles that earned her another victory. In the pole vault, Miner reached 7 feet for first place.

Also in the 100 hurdles, Mollie Kissner PR’ed with a second-place time of 18.11 before posting another best time of 33.01 to take second in the 200 hurdles. In the 4x100 relay, a third-place time of 1:01.89 was recorded by Samantha Herchkorm, Kayley Harris, O’Brien and Wittick. The 4x400 relay team of Rachel Kuntz, Ashlyn Aguirre, Katherine Wilson and Decker placed third in 5:58.73.

In the 200-meter dash, Gabri Lundberg placed fourth with a PR of 29.91. AnaMia Davila’s time of 1:12.07 was good for fourth in the 400. In the 800 run, Jasmyne Lensegrav took third in 3:00.63.

The eighth-grade Cubs saw Jaighden Rayment, Lundberg, Kissner and Miner race to a first-place time of 2:06.97 in the 4x200 relay. In the 4x100 relay, Rayment, Davila, Sierra Sanders and Abi Cubbage claimed fourth in 1:00.12.

In the long jump, a leap of 11-11.5 gave Davila fourth place. Kissner earned third in the triple jump after reaching 28-4.5. Rachel Bonander dominated the throwing events, heaving the shot put 26-10.75 for a win before winning the discus with a throw of 88-2.5, which was a personal best.

On the seventh-grade side, the Cubs’ 4x200 relay team of Heather Wittick, Gabi Metzel, Natalie Dillivan and Kady Wells earned a victory in 2:07.33.

In the 100 and 200, Wells posted personal-best times of 14.31 and 29.20, respectively, to finish third. Dillivan took fourth in the 200 in a PR time of 30.10. Dillivan also took second in the 400 with a time of 1:09.93. Metzler finished behind her with a PR time of 1:13.30, good for fourth.

In the 800, Sidney O’Brien placed fifth in 2:57.59 — a personal record — and Kaitlyn Decker finished second in the 1,600 with a time of 6:43.89.

Herchkorn later placed first in the high jump after clearing 4-2. Harris reached 4 feet for third. In the pole vault, Kuntz claimed fourth place with a height of 5-6. Dillivan earned a third-place finish in the triple jump after posting a PR distance of 26-7. In the discus, Marie Ramie launched a throw of 58-0.5, a PR, for second place while Micah Wainscott took fourth with a 56-11.5.

“Our athletes did an outstanding job competing in some less than desirable weather,” PMS girls coach Dale Ann Meeker said. “Our kids have been training hard, and it is hard to single any individual out as so many stepped up and competed well.”
