Panther volleyball takes second in Rawlins

Posted

The Powell High School volleyball team finished second at the Rawlins Invite last weekend, posting a 5-1 record in the two-day event.

Due to court availability and a junior varsity tournament taking place simultaneously, matches during the varsity tournament were only played to 21 points — instead of the regular 25 — and therefore did not affect team records.

So despite the successful weekend, the Lady Panthers’ record still officially stands at 12-1 this year. PHS coach Cindi Smith was still glad to get her girls on the court for another opportunity to get better as the season continues.

“At this point in the season, it’s just about getting the girls out there to look at the things we need to keep building on,” Smith said. “We’re finding success, but we know we can keep building off of it.”

On Friday, PHS cruised in pool play, downing Glenrock (21-7, 21-15) and Pinedale (21-12, 21-7), before getting a small test from Torrington in a 21-13, 22-20 victory.

Saturday saw the Panthers defeat Lovell for the third time this season, 16-21, 21-16, 15-12, and Newcastle 21-17, 21-14 to set up a title match with Mountain View.

PHS may have run out of gas, as the Buffaloes secured the title with a 21-11, 21-13 win.

“Saturday wasn’t our best day ... we didn’t play as well as we would’ve liked,” Smith added. “We always have to keep working hard because there are definitely things we know we need to improve.”

For the tournament, Breanna Donarski and sophomore standout Kalina Smith shared the team lead in aces with five. Smith knocked down 50 kills and had 41 digs. Jenni Ebersberger had a team-high 64 digs. Anissa Warner had 8 blocks and 17 assists.

PHS resumes play at 6:30 p.m. (today) Thursday when it hosts Cody.
