The Powell High School volleyball team started its season with a bang last weekend, going 5-1 to win the Douglas Tournament at Douglas High School.
In pool play, the Panthers downed Newcastle (25-19, 25-22) and Buffalo (25-6, 25-21) before dropping a three-set decision to Torrington (22-25, 26-24, 8-15).
PHS rebounded in the gold bracket, ousting Thermopolis (25-14, 25-13), Douglas (25-23, 25-17) and Wright (25-17, 25-17) to claim the tourney.
“Overall there were a lot of positives to take from the weekend,” PHS coach Cindi Smith said. “Some unforced errors plagued us a bit in that loss, but our kids are really good at learning from their mistakes and growing from them. I think they showed some of that.”
Powell served at a 93.2-percent efficiency, led by Taylor Woodward’s 100-percent. Jenni Ebersberger paced the Panthers with 71 digs, while rising sophomore Kalina Smith collected 73 kills and 11 blocks.
“We definitely have great talents on this team,” Smith said of the well-rounded effort. “The girls know their jobs and they embrace their roles well. And that really makes everybody better.”
The defending state champions return to action at noon Friday and Saturday for the Montana/Wyoming Border War at Billings Central Catholic High School in Billings, Mont. PHS will then host its first home match Tuesday when Lovell comes to town.
