Editorials

Sunday was the day we set aside to honor our fathers.

In her last journal entry in 1925, 15-year-old Helen Mettler wrote, “God bless Wyoming and keep it wild.” The teen later died in an accident at Taggart Canyon, outside of Jackson Hole.

The summer season has just started, but it’s already turned deadly on Wyoming’s highways; so we’re urging everyone — tourists and locals — to follow the rules and play it safe.

We’re sick and tired of the ongoing rancor of the presidential race. And it’s no wonder — the election has become a battleground, and we’ve been bombarded with partisan, divisive and sometimes vicious presidential politics for three years.

When tough decisions arise — like what programs to cut at Northwest College or whether to declare bankruptcy at Powell Valley Healthcare — the Powell community often turns to volunteers.

Summer is here and there is a lot to look forward to with all the festivals, competitions, parades and more that are scheduled over the next few months. Plus there’s all the camping, hiking and more that have been waited for all winter. With so much going on and so many places to explore during the summer, it can be difficult to keep kids from losing some of what they learned during the school year.

We remembered our dead on Monday — as families, as a community and as a nation. In particular, we paid our respect to those who gave their lives while serving their country.

EDITORIAL: Farewell to The Merc

Community support needed on Main Street

A longtime Powell clothing store is shutting down this week, marking its final days as a downtown business.

It’s election season, but an uncontested election is hardly an election — it would be like going to a restaurant that only serves one item with no options for altering it to suit your taste.

We encourage anyone who wants to make a difference to consider running for office.

We’ve all seen them: Tourists who get too close to wildlife in Yellowstone National Park, who leave walkways, park in the middle of the road, feed animals and do other stupid things in obvious disregard for park rules.
