Two occasions coincide this weekend in our community: Memorial Day weekend and the beginning of summer vacation for Powell’s school children.

Both are important to remember.

Plans for a new climbing wall in the Northwest College Johnson Fitness Center are moving forward, but slowly. Other improvements to the fitness center are also in the works.

Once again, Northwest College is bracing for a budget cut for the coming school year.

This time, the revenue shortfall for fiscal year 2018 (school year 2017-18) is estimated at $300,000-$350,000.

Thumbs up to warm spring weather. After a very long, hard winter and a cool, wet early spring, we’re happy to see warmer days and better weather. After a late start, farmers are out in their fields, barley and alfalfa are up and growing, and many other crops are planted.

The northbound lane of Chief Joseph Scenic Highway (Wyo. Highway 296) continues to slide downhill.

“It was about 6 inches [down] last night, then it dropped several feet overnight,” Cody Beers, a regional spokesman for the Wyoming Department of Transportation, said late Thursday afternoon.

Farmers like warm, predictable spring weather and getting out into their fields early to plant their crops.

This spring, they’ve had neither.

Going back to school for nursing degrees didn’t happen for John and Shawn Hurt without a lot of thought and preparation.

Our hearty congratulations go to Powell High School’s Team 3188 (also known as Squiggle Splat Bang) for the team’s outstanding performance at the world robotics tournament.

A spring snowstorm caused rocks to fall continuously in the Wind River Canyon south of Thermopolis, prompting the closure of U.S. Highway 20/Wyoming Highway 789 through the canyon. The highway reopened Saturday morning.

With the weather warming up and the end of the school year nearing, more people will take to the highways as they head for graduations, vacations and other special events.
