The wife of a former Powell High School principal died Thursday, Dec. 21 in Torrington.

Mary E. Schmidt, 81, died at her Torrington home. Cremation has taken place, and private family interment will follow at a later date.

She was born July 18, 1925, in Cook, Minn., to Willis and Cora (Howe) Beatty. She grew up and received her education in Cook, graduating from high school there. She attended Mesabi Junior College in Virginia, Minn.

She moved to Douglas, Wyo., where she worked as a secretary at the high school. She met Don Schmidt, and they were married in December of 1948 in Gering, Nebr.

They lived in various communities in Wyoming, primarily in Powell where he was the high school principal. They retired to Torrington in 1986, and Don died in 1994.

Mary loved gardening and was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church, the Grassroots Garden Club and Yoder Women’s Club. A memorial has been established to the tree fund with the Grassroots Garden Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Kerry Spears and husband Dana of Long Beach, Calif., and Katherine Patrick and husband John of Torrrington; two sons, Kyle Schmidt and wife of Cheyenne and Kirk Schmidt of Lander; a sister, Cory Hawkinson, of Virginia, Minn.; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother; and an infant sister.
