Mr. Carlsen was born Aug. 4, 1923, in Chicago, Ill., to Robert T. and Sophie L. Carlsen. He grew up in Gurnee, Ill., and was graduated from Warren Township High School in 1942.

On Jan. 10, 1948, he married Evelyn C. Boysen in Libertyville, Ill. To this union were born five girls- Catherine Evelyn, Carol Ann, Sara Leah, Jean Marie and Roberta Kay.

Mr. Carlsen worked for International Harvester on the assembly line and later in Research and Development. He also farmed at the same time. He and his wife raised their children in Diamond Lake and later in Mundelein, Ill.

He loved to fish and would take the whole family to Canada, and later to Wyoming on fishing vacations. He was in love with the West. He and Evelyn retired to Powell in 1990.

He enjoyed reading about history, collecting stamps, fishing, hunting, playing cards, collecting cans and having coffee with friends. He was active with the Methodist Men's Group and took pride in selling the most tickets to the annual steak dinner. He enjoyed telling stories and drinking coffee with friends at Pepe's, and afterwards could be seen collecting cans at Homesteader Park along the highway. He taught his grandchildren how to fish, play solitaire and started them a stamp collection of their own.

Survivors include his wife Evelyn of Powell; daughter Catherine and husband Tom Meyer of Woodstock, Ill., and their children, Amanda and David; daughter Carol Carlsen of Vernon Hills, Ill.; daughter Sara and her husband Duane Miller of Powell and their children, Kara and Bert Beech, Lisa Miller and her daughter Julia Nicole and Michelle and Steve Clark; daughter Jean (Tina) and husband Glenn Cederquist of Antioch, Ill., and their children Laura and Jim; and daughter Roberta (Robbie) and husband Bruce Nemeth of Wayne, Ill., and their children Bobby and Ben. For those who wish, the family would appreciate memorial contributions to the First United Methodist Church stained glass project. A memorial service will also be held in Illinois for family and friends.
