George V. Grosh Jr.

George V. Grosh Jr. of Meeteetse unexpectedly died in his sleep the evening of June 9, 2017, at the Worland Health Care Center. He was 88.

He came into this world on Feb. 21, 1929, in Chandler, Arizona, and after moving around Arizona and New Mexico, his family settled in the town of Willcox, Arizona. 

He married Janice Williamson Nov. 24, 1950. They had two children Mildred (Meg) and George, III (Punch). 

George moved his family to Meeteetse on June 1, 1961. He worked for Cody Gas Company and soon became a part of the community. He also worked for Lewis and Son Construction, Amoco Production and then Apache Corp until his retirement.

After the passing of his first wife, he married his high school sweetheart Barbara (Joanne) Bennett on Jan. 13, 2000.   His family expanded by three, Michael (Chopper) Sowersby, Terri (Sowersby) Wicks and John McCarty.

George loved hunting, fishing, camping, water skiing, down-hill skiing, napping and helping others. He was a longtime member of the Meeteetse Fire Department and the Meeteetse Lions Club. He also avidly participated in the Meeteetse Centennial Committee and was on the board of directors for Chase Hawk Memorial. His biggest joy in life was helping others. He helped getting families financial aid through different organizations and plowed snow to clear driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots. He loved Meeteetse and its people.

He was preceded in death by his parents George and Mildred, sons Punch and Chopper, wife Jan and sister Gloria (Woods).

George is survived by his daughter Meg (Jack) Nicholson, granddaughter Nicole (Josh) Blake, two great-granddaughters Emma and Anna Blake. He is also survived by his wife Joanne, daughter Terri (Jonathan), son John and grandchildren Tyler and Teryl Murray, Cody and Kalynn McCarty, Cherti and Houston Sowersby, and great-grandchildren Emyt and Meryn Murray.

Services will be held Friday, July 21 at 2 p.m. at Lion’s Park in Meeteetse and a celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. at the Cowboy Bar in Meeteetse.

Memorial donations can be made to the Meeteetse Senior Citizens. Cremation services are with Ballard Funeral Home.
