Marilyn Buchanan Smith

Marilyn Buchanan Smith, 72, of Powell, Wyoming and formerly of Greybull, Wyoming passed away Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017 at Powell Valley Care Center in Powell after a 3-year battle with cancer.

Marilyn was born on July 12, 1944, in Lovell, Wyoming to Albert LeRoy Buchanan and Millie Jean (Bull) Buchanan.  Marilyn grew up in Greybull and graduated from Greybull High School in 1962. She furthered her education at Eastern Montana College in Billings, Montana where she received her teaching degree and her Master’s Degree in education.

Marilyn and Dennis Wayne Smith were high school sweethearts and were happily married until he passed away in Vietnam.

Marilyn taught in Powell for 35 years and volunteered at the school activities. She was a much respected teacher who enjoyed teaching reading to her students and tutored those students who needed help. Marilyn went the “extra mile” to help children. When Marilyn retired she was involved in Bible Study with her close friends from Powell and Cody.

Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Mona (Rick) Heggie of Aberdeen, Washington; four grandchildren, Cole (Kaliechia), Chance, Toby, and Austin, all of Aberdeen, Washington; her first great-granddaughter who will be born this summer; her sister, Linda Hanks of Monument, Colorado; and her niece, Nikki Grotz and family of Monument, Colorado. 

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Wayne Smith and her mother and father.

A viewing will be held at Atwood Family Funeral Chapel at 620 Greybull Avenue, Greybull, Wyoming on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017 from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.  A private family graveside service will be held on Thursday afternoon.

Atwood Family Funeral Directors assisted the family with the arrangements.
