(Nov. 9, 1948 - April 19, 2016)

Emily Sophia Coale died on April 19, 2016, at Spirit Mountain Hospice House, with family members and nurses by her side.

She was born on Nov. 9, 1948, to Dorsey and Lucille (Peterson) Coale, joining brothers Barney, Pete and Bill Roussan and Iver Coale. In 1957, she became the stepdaughter of John R. Hogg.

Emily graduated from Meeteetse High School in 1967 and from Northwest College in 1969. She worked for Meeteetse Schools, the Hogg Ranch, the Meeteetse Mercantile, the Cowboy Bar & Club Café and the Wood River Lodge. In 1977, her mother opened Lucille’s Café, and she worked at and ran the cafe for 36 years, until it closed in 2013.

In 1975, her son, Scott J. Coale was born, and Emily was a dedicated mother until the time of her death. She was instrumental in the startup of the community holiday baskets — just one of the many ways Emily gave to the Meeteetse community.

During her 36 years in Lucille’s Café, she met many acquaintances and lifelong friends. She was famous for her cinnamon rolls and homemade pies. Emily was always willing to give a free meal to anyone who needed it.

She was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church until moving to Cody in 2013, where she attended Christ Episcopal Church.

During her three-year battle with cancer, she developed close relationships with many people, but particularly with her two grandsons, William and Scott, and niece Lucille Sax.

She is survived by her son Scott and his wife Diane and grandsons William and Scott; sister Julie (Kelly) Hammond; niece Lucille and nephew John-Michael Sax and his family; and brothers Bill Roussan (Kathy), Lynn Coale (Sarah) and Allen Hogg (Kristine), sisters-in-law Connie Roussan and Ronee Hogg as well as many Roussan, Coale and Hogg nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews, whom she loved dearly.

Emily was preceded in death by her parents Dorsey, Lucille and John and brothers Iver Coale, Barney and Pete Roussan and Johnny Hogg.

Services will be held at the Meeteetse School Gym at 1 p.m. on May 14, with interment of ashes to follow at the Meeteetse Cemetery. Ballard Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made in Emily’s name to one of the following: Spirit Mountain Hospice House, American Cancer Society-Housing Fund, Billings Office; The Lainey Cole Memorial Women’s Cancer Fund c/o Soroptomist International of Cody; or Meeteetse Senior Center.
