Lois Kathleen Hunker Spiering of Powell died peacefully on Oct. 22, 2015.

Lois was born in Orient, South Dakota, on June 4, 1925, to Julian (Hap) and Eva Hunker. When Lois was 12, the family moved to Hillsboro, Oregon, where she graduated from high school in 1943.

Following graduation, Lois was a legal secretary and the secretary to a mining engineer before her marriage to Vincent ‘Jim’ Spiering on Nov. 24, 1947.

In 1950, the couple moved to Powell, where they homesteaded as part of the Heart Mountain Project. In addition to caring for her family, Lois enjoyed playing the organ, writing, traveling and playing pinochle.

Lois was an active member of St. Barbara’s Catholic Church and she served for many years on the board of the Wyoming Council of Catholic Women. She also served the National Council of Catholic Women as the chairman of Community Affairs, and later served on the U.S. Catholic Bishop’s National Advisory Council.

Lois is survived by her brother, Don Hunker of Forest Grove, Oregon; and her five sons, Jerry (Lorraine) of Buffalo, Ken (Jeanie) of Spokane, Washington, Gene (Susi) of Vancouver, B.C, Canada, Kelly (Sylvia) of Powell, and Tom (Janet) of Powell; 34 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Jim, of 64 years, and grandson, Michael Spiering.

A rosary was held Sunday, Oct 25, at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church. Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 26, also at St. Barbara’s. The Rev. Glenn Whewell and Rev. Samuel Spiering officiated.

Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.

Thompson Funeral Home assisted the family with funeral arrangements.
