Catherine Marie (Howard) Miller died peacefully in her sleep on Aug. 4, 2015, following a prolonged illness. She was 63. 

Cathy was born in Powell on Nov. 3, 1951, to Richard Roland and Estella Belle “Dodie” (Baird) Howard. She was their first child and the first grandchild to her paternal grandparents, Leonard Everett and Erma Ethel (Hankins) Howard and her maternal grandparents, Henry Washington and Rena Mae (Spinney) Baird.

Cathy grew up in Maine, California and Wyoming.  

She married Vince Miller, also of Powell, and had four children, of which three survive. They lived in Charleston, South Carolina, during her husband’s Naval career and moved to Virginia in 1984 where she spent the rest of her life working as a bank teller, clerk, and raising her children and grandchildren. She also served the public at the local food bank.

She is survived by her former husband; three children, Leilani Christine (Crystal) McDonald, Vincent Richard “Rick” (Natasha) Miller and Brandee Lynn Guevara; as well as five grandchildren listed in chronological order: Sebastian Michael Miller, Christina Elizabeth “Chrissea,” David Alexander, and Jordan Tyler Guevara, and Jaedon Daniel McDonald. Also surviving is one sister, Sherrie Jean (Richard) Perkins.

She was preceded in death by both her parents, one child, Robert James Miller, and one sister, Loretta Roxann “Lori” McMillen.

Cremation has taken place in Virginia at her request. Memorial services in Virginia will be held Aug. 22, at noon followed by a reception to celebrate her life at the Baker-Post Funeral Home at 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas, Virginia. The family respectfully requests memorial donations in her name be made to the Remington Volunteer Fire Department at 200 E Marshall St., Remington, VA 22734. Baker-Post will also accept flowers the day of the memorial, and flowers may be ordered at the URL above.
