Ellen Jean (Smart) Wirth, loving wife, sister, aunt, mother and grandmother, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015, in Buffalo of complications from lymphoma. She was 82.

Ellen Jean, “Jeanne” to her family and friends, was born June 19, 1932, at her grandparents’ home in Greybull. Her parents were Bassette (Rex) Smart and Hazel Marie Jacobsen.

She married Dale S. Wirth on Aug. 1, 1949, in Billings, and they made their home in Powell.

In her life Jeanne worked many jobs, including Sees Candy in California, Bonner’s department store, JC Penney’s, the Gold Thimble and the Powell Library.

Jeanne’s favorite pastime was her handiwork. She was an accomplished seamstress who loved sewing, knitting, needlepoint, and sharing wonderful afghans, doilies and beautiful embroidery creations with those she loved. She often knitted baby dresses for fundraisers and raffles. Jeanne even made clothes for her four sons and herself. She loved to work in the garden and kept a beautiful flower and vegetable garden.

Serving others was a large part of her life. She donated countless hours to the Powell Eagles Auxiliary, the American Legion, the Powell Valley Care Center beauty shop, the Methodist church boutique, the Red Hat Society and was a lifelong blood donor.

She is survived by her four sons Ron (Sandy) of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Rick (Nancy) of Westminster, Colo., Larry (Patsy) of Buffalo, and Don (Fatima) of Denver, Colo.; and 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her husband Dale, her mother Hazel, father Rex, brother Don Lindsey, and sister Barbara Hamit.

Graveside services were held on Monday, Feb. 23, at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Powell.
