Evangeline “Vangie” Jane Sanders died on Jan. 27, 2015, in Bellevue, Wash. She was 84.

She was born Nov. 4, 1930, in Hazelton, N.D., to Edward and Minnie Schmidt.

Evangeline graduated from Powell High School.

She married Howard Sanders in 1948. They lived in Powell for 37 years before moving to Camano Island, Wash.

Vangie dedicated her life to serving Jesus Christ and was called to pray and share the Gospel. She faithfully prayed for everyone she met and always made sure to share the Gospel with each person. This was evident even to the last day of her earthly life.

Nurses who cared for her the last week of her life shared how she was praying for them by name, telling them about Jesus and reading her Bible to them.

Many a young child was given a ride by Evangeline to Sunday school or vacation Bible school.

Evangeline was also a master gardener, which she quickly pointed out was always the work of Jesus, not her.

Evangeline was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Howard Sanders.

She is survived by six children, Howard (Ann) Sanders of Powell, Eldon (Cat) Sanders of Ralston, Mary (Francis) Vande Veegaete of Powell, Judy (Earl) Otto of Sierra Madre, Calif., Janet (Terry) Cronin of Powell and Jeanette (Tony) Reed of Seattle, Wash.

She also is survived by 19 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Isabelle Morrison of Powell, Eileen Boyce of Seattle and Rose Godfrey of southern California.

Memorials may be given to Vangie’s favorite charities: Heart For Africa, P.O. Box 1308, Roswell, GA 30077; Union Gospel Mission, 2222 52nd St. SE, Everett, WA 98203; and Disabled Veterans of America (local office).
