Mike Starcevich of Powell died on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at his home. He was 58.

Mike was born Feb. 10, 1956, to David and Shirley (Casey) Starcevich in Butte, Mont. He had many fond memories of his growing-up years in Butte, which always held a special place in his heart. He graduated from Butte Central High in 1974.

After earning a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Montana - Billings in 1979, Mike began his teaching career at his old stomping grounds, Butte Central, where he taught high school English for several years.

In 1985, he moved to Powell, where he spent 28 years as a middle and high school librarian.

During this time, he pursued a master’s degree from Grand Canyon University.

Mike was a much-loved and respected teacher and friend to many colleagues and hundreds of students who he impacted over the years.

In 1991, Mike married Angela Novakovich in Thermopolis. The little town has never recovered from the hordes of Butte people who descended from up north for a celebration that is fondly remembered at family gatherings to this day.

Mike and Angela settled in Powell, where they raised their family. David was born in 1992 and Mikala in 1994. Many happy years were spent camping, fishing and supporting his children’s activities. He also enjoyed reading and playing handball.

Mike was a devoted family man. He always greeted people with a smile and a “good morning,” no matter the time of day. He was a special educator who made a huge impact on his students and truly loved all who passed his way.

Mike was preceded in death by his father and mother.

He is survived by his wife Angela of Powell, along with children David and Mikala. Mike also is survived by his brothers Dave (Marilyn), Tom and Pat and sister Lori (Dave) Cerise, all of Butte. His faithful companion, Kipper, will miss Mike greatly.

A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Powell High School. Interment will be at Holly Cross Cemetery in Butte. A fellowship gathering will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the McQueen Club in Butte.

Memorials may be made in Mike’s name to Northwest College — General Scholarship Fund.

Arrangements are being handled by Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory.
