Jo Jayne Nickles, 55, of Cody, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, at Spirit Mountain Hospice as a result of cancer.

Jo was born Feb. 23, 1959, in Blue Island, Ill., to Paul and Gaylene Petty. Jo was the oldest of three children, and graduated Niobrara County High School in Lusk in 1977.  

Jo then moved to Yankton to attend school at Mount Marty College.

She married Larry Nickles on July 1, 1978, and they had two children, Mark and Kayla.  

Jo lived in Sidney, Neb., from 1981 to 1990, at which time she moved back to Yankton, and worked at the Human Services Center.  

Jo and Larry divorced in 1998. She remained in Yankton with her kids until they finished school, and moved to Cody in 2004, where she worked with Northern DDSP, and then NOWCAP.  

Jo enjoyed spending time with her family when she could, and would do anything for anyone that needed help.  

She loved animals, rock collecting, movies, fishing and going to Yellowstone National Park.

Jo is survived by her son Mark (Arica) Nickles of Yankton, S.D.; daughter Kayla Nickles of Cody; grandchildren Conner and Anna of Yankton, S.D., parents Paul and Gaylene Petty of Cody; sisters Jana (Tom) McAtee of Cody and Joni (John) Konhilas of Tucson, Ariz., as well as nieces and nephews.

Jo was preceded by her grandparents Ronald and Nila Petty, and Orbra and Ethel Kilpatrick in death.

Visitation and services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Ballard Funeral Home in Cody.
