Jay L. Asay died at his home in Frannie on July 26, 2014, due to complications of diabetes. He was 54.

Jay was born on June 5, 1960, in Lovell to Jay and Grace Asay.

He graduated from Deaver High School in 1978 and continued to live on the family farm, helping his dad and mom. He enjoyed fishing and going to the mountains. Jay also enjoyed carpentry work and especially loved his job working for Moore’s Custom Cabinets.

A special memory written by his nephew James Cozzens sums up who Jay was very nicely:

Uncle Jay was quite the character. He always had a smile on his face even when he was in pain. He loved to sit and just watch the world go by, which sometimes made you think he knew a lot more than he was letting on.

He loved the land and the place where he was raised. Everyone loved that farm, but Jay cherished it! It was his lifeblood like his father before.

Even though Jay was a quiet guy, when you were in the wrong he didn’t hesitate to let you know it. Jay always took the time and patience with things, it was not laziness: It was his way of making sure things were done right.

He was a calm breeze on a hot day that would relieve you with an ice tea and a smile, and if you were lucky, his sense of humor. There was not a mean bone in Jay’s body, unless you happened to be a snake or a mosquito — he found joy in sending them to their maker.

There are people in life that speed to get where they want and there are those who take their time and wait. Jay was a fisherman in life and knew not to rush things. You go too fast and you lose the catch. Jay was patient and knew the best comes to those who wait.

Jay will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Jay was preceded in death by his father William Jay Banks Asay, sister Tina Lee Asay, and nephew Levi Lee Loyning.

He is survived by his mother Grace Asay, sisters Penny Cozzens (Nelson), Toni Renner (Russell) and Debbie Loyning, along with many nieces and nephews and extended family members.

Services will be held at the Cowley Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 29. Burial will follow the service in the Deaver cemetery.

Haskell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
