John Henry Spargur died peacefully at the Spirit Mountain Hospice House in Cody on Tuesday, July 22, 2014. He was 88.

He was born in Salina, Mo., on March 24, 1926, to Henry and Bertha Spargur. He was the seventh of eight children.

During the Depression years, an older sibling wrote home and said he had found work in Wyoming. When he was around the age of 8, John’s family moved from Missouri to Greybull, seeking jobs.

He attended school in Greybull and at the age of 17 joined the U.S. Navy. John was proud to be a World War II veteran and honored to serve his country.

After the war, he went to work for Ohio Oil/Marathon Pipeline. Throughout his career, John and his family lived in Cody, the Oregon Basin pipeline camp, Greybull and Powell. He retired in Powell after 40 years.

He married Charlotte Klaus of Basin on Nov. 13, 1948, in Billings. To this union, four children were born — one son, Dennis, and three daughters, Lisa, Ava and Laura.

John enjoyed hunting, camping, gardening, playing cards, listening to country music, watching football and last but not least, any and all family gatherings.

He was preceded in death by his parents and all seven of his siblings.

John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Charlotte Spargur of Powell; son Dennis (Judith) Spargur of Cody; daughters Lisa (Ken) Stockwell of Cody; Ava (Jim) Tobin of Powell; and Laura (John) Underwood of Rock Springs; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews who thought Uncle John was “one of a kind.”

Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Powell at 2 p.m. Monday, July 28.

Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.thompsonfuneral.net.
