Reginald ‘Denny’ Hall

Reginald “Denny” Hall, 87, of Powell died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, surrounded by family and his good friend, Dr. Bob Fordham.

Denny was born in Morgantown, W.V. on March 22, 1925 to Roscoe Hall and Christine Everett. He graduated from Morgantown High School in 1943.

Denny was a mechanic and partsman for Chittum Motor Company and later worked as a supply clerk for the Monongalia County School Board where he later retired.

Denny enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and served with the 13th and 17th Airborne Division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the Ardennes Counteroffensive. He parachuted into Germany on March 24, 1945 at the beginning of the invasion into Germany.

He received two Purple Hearts, an oak-leaf cluster and a Bronze Star for his service in WWII. When Denny arrived back in the states on Aug. 23, 1945, he was given a 45-day furlough. During this furlough, one of the first people he met was Donna Davis of Morgantown, W.V., a bookkeeper at Cowan Baking Co., where his father worked. They were married April 20, 1946 in Hastings, W.V., and were happily married for 67 1/2 years.

Denny and Donna sold the family farm in West Virginia and moved to Powell in 1994 to be with their son Denny Jr. and his wife Jackie.

Denny was a member of the Goshen Baptist Church in Morgantown, W.V., where he was an ordained deacon. He also attended and supported the First United Methodist Church in Powell.

Denny enjoyed fishing, camping and gardening. At the age of 72, he began acrylic painting. He painted hundreds of scenes of barns, wildlife and mountains. His paintings are now hung in many homes throughout the United States and have won several blue ribbons at the local county fair.

He is survived by his loving wife Donna Hall; daughter Patty (Gary, who was like a son) Mayfield of Powell; son Reginald Denny (Jackie) Hall Jr. of Powell; grandchildren Wendy Sue (Vince) Barker of Meeteetse; Crystal (Brian) Frankenberry of Powell; Heather (Paul) Faxon of Powell; Stacey Logan of Powell; and 10 great-grandchildren. Denny also was a surrogate father to Mary-Ann Whetsell of Morgantown, W.V.

Denny was preceded in death by his parents; son Allen Kent Hall; and grandson Jeffrey Allen Mayfield.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21 at the First United Methodist Church in Powell, followed by a luncheon at the church.
