Hillhouse, Cast win at Great Falls

NWC wrestlers fare well as lone JUCO team in fieldThe sixth-ranked Northwest College Trapper wrestling team crowned two champions at the University of Great Falls open tournament. The finish pleased Trapper coach Jim Zeigler, who noted that Northwest College was the lone two-year program in the tournament field.

“Three of the teams that were there were ranked in the NAIA polls,” said Zeigler. “It was a deep tournament with a lot of good wrestlers.”

Included in that list are the Trappers' own Jesse Hillhouse (133) and Keithen Cast (174). Both went undefeated in the open tournament to finish atop the weekend podium.

“Both of those guys just did an outstanding job,” said Zeigler. “They had a fantastic weekend.”

Also earning accolades from the head coach were 285-pounder Sears Tiernan, who finished fourth overall, and Nick Petersen, who did not place after going 2-2 in a loaded 184-pound division.

“Nick wrestled well, he just faced some really, really tough kids in his bracket,” said Zeigler.

All four of the Trappers' weekend standouts are ranked among the top four in their weight divisions, according to the most recent NJCAA wrestling poll.

“Once again, we were really consistent with four guys,” said Zeigler. “What we need now is to get some Ws out of some of the other guys. The time has come for them to start catching up, and that's starting to happen. The kids are beginning to learn the basic positions they need for college wrestling.”

In addition to the Trappers' open tournament performance, the team finished 1-0-1 in duals over the weekend. The Trappers dropped Simon Fraser 28-12 in dual action while battling to a 24-24 deadlock against the NAIA's No. 15 team, Embry-Riddle out of Arizona.

Hillhouse, Cast, Petersen and Tiernan were joined by Trapper wrestlers Bobby Robbins, Jeremy Luna and Ben Price as winners against Simon Fraser. Hillhouse, Timber Holmquist, Cast, Petersen and Tiernan picked up points to help achieve the draw against Embry-Riddle.

A dual against Western Wyoming originally scheduled for Tuesday night was postponed until the Apodaca Duals in Powell later this season.

Northwest College wraps up first-semester wrestling action this weekend. The team travels to North Idaho to face both the host school and Southwestern Oregon in head-to-head dual competition.
