Santa and workshop a hit with kids

Santa came back to an appreciative following.

It had been a few years since Santa flew in for a downtown appearance on the day after Thanksgiving. But judging from the response Friday, youngsters and their parents are hoping the jolly old elf can continue to squeeze in a Powell stop.

“It was really neat,” said Sharon Earhart, who chaired the Santa’s Workshop event Friday for the Powell Rotary Club. “Santa was to arrive at 10 a..m. in the city parking lot on Clark Street, and he came in a little early, so the helicopter pilot just circled the town with Santa waving at the kids. They loved it.”

Santa visited with the kids after landing and then made his way to The Commons where he was available for pictures with children, arranged by T.J.’s Portrait Studio. The accompanying Santa’s Workshop had 13 different crafts to engage the kids.

“We probably had 175 children for Santa and close to 200 doing the crafts,” Earhart said. “It was just a wonderful effort by volunteers helping with the crafts. We had no idea how many people would show up.  We were blown away by the parents and grandparents sitting down with their kids, helping with the crafts. It was so exciting.”

Santa’s Workshop had been planned for two hours (between 10 a.m. and noon), but Santa was still having his picture taken with kids at 1 p.m.

“The Rotary Club wanted to do something to give back to the community, and one of the things we felt that people missed was Santa coming in the day after Thanksgiving,” Earhart said. “Our helicopter pilot (Curt Abraham of Byron) worked with us so well. We’re already planning for next year.”

Rotary also thanked the City of Powell for clearing the municipal parking lot for Santa’s arrival.

“It’s a cooperative effort — people working together,” she said.
