Legislating begins with ‘school’ for Rep. Dan Laursen

Posted

New members of the Wyoming Legislature, including Rep.-elect Dan Laursen of Powell, will be introduced to the conduct of the legislative process during a three-day orientation for new legislators  this week in Cheyenne.

Legislative leaders and the Legislative Service Office will acquaint new legislators with the procedures of filing a bill and how a bill works its way through both houses to become a law. The “school,” held in the House chambers in the state Capitol, will cover a half day Wednesday, a full day Thursday and a half day Friday.

Laursen, a Republican elected to represent House District 25, will serve on the Agriculture Committee and the Travel, Recreation and Wildlife Committee when the 63rd Legislature convenes Jan. 13.

Committee assignments were made at party caucuses. Republicans will dominate both the House of Representatives (51-9) and the state Senate (26-4). All local legislators are Republicans.

Laursen said he was pleased that he landed his first choice (Agriculture) in the committee assignments. He has a background of farming and in management of the Heart Mountain Irrigation District.

“I’m pleased,” he said. “I asked for Agriculture as my first choice. I think I’ll do good there. I have a good understanding of ag and water issues.”

His second and third choices for committees were Appropriations and Judiciary. He received Travel, Recreation and Wildlife instead, and concluded, “It’ll be good. But there are a lot of freshmen on TRW.”

In other committee assignments for Park and Big Horn County legislators, Rep. David Northrup of Powell, HD-50, will serve on the House Education and Revenue committees.

Rep. Elaine Harvey of Lovell, HD-26, will again chair the House Labor and Health Committee.

Rep. Sam Krone of Cody, HD-24, will serve on the House Judiciary Committee.

Sen. Hank Coe of Cody and Sen. Ray Peterson of Cowley each will chair a committee in the Senate. Coe will continue to head the Senate Education Committee and also serve on the Minerals Committee, and Peterson again will chair the Senate Revenue Committee and also serve on the Labor and Health Committee.
