City’s second trash trailer misses delivery goal

Posted

The second trailer to haul trash from Powell to Billings, Mont., was scheduled to arrive in August, but as October looms, it is still not here.

City Administrator Zane Logan said the trailer that the city ordered in May is not ready yet. There are problems with the “load cells,” electronic sensors that check the weight of the load, he said.

“They’re doing some extensive testing at the factory yet,” Logan said.

It should be here by mid-October, he said.

The city ordered the 48-foot trailer, which has a capacity of up to 22 tons, from Nexgen Municipal Inc. of Burlington, Ontario, Canada, which offered the trailer for $198,526. The city made a down payment of $69,484.10 and the balance will be paid upon delivery.

The city also bought a trailer and equipment for the city’s transfer station from Nexgen last year. The trailer cost $172,114, with a down payment of $60,240. The funds came from Sanitation Department fees.

That trailer has been taking household waste to the Billings city landfill since July 1. The city plans to add two axles to this trailer to bring its capacity up to 19 to 20 tons as well.

Sanitation/Public Health Superintendent Darrell Rood said the trailer has operated well and there have been no problems in the first three months of hauling the trash across the state line.

Logan said the goal for the city is to move as much trash as possible to the Billings landfill each trip, since it is billed per trip.

Warren Transport Inc., which has facilities in Warren, Mont., and Lovell, charges the city $500 per round trip.
