Love, marriage and popcorn; Couple weds at drive-in theater

The smell of popcorn was in the air, their names were on the marquee and Adam Sandler was crooning as Jordan Jansson and James Comer were joined in wedlock.

The rain had slackened off and the skies were clearing, allowing the American Dream Drive-in to show Sandler’s movie, “The Wedding Singer,” during the couple’s reception. Yes, this was not your typical marriage.

“I just wanted something fun and different and not the same ol’, same ol’,” said the bride, now known as Jansson-Comer. “And who doesn’t love going to the drive-in?”

Jansson-Comer, 29, a Powell resident, is the owner of Dapper Dog Grooming. Comer, 27, who is moving from Worland as the couple settles here, works for Jadeco, an electrical contractor.

Sparks flew when the couple started dating two years ago, and they decided to get married this summer. Jansson-Comer, who worked at the drive-in on the edge of Powell for a few summers, thought of holding the ceremony there.

“It was always fun working out there,” she said. “It was always fun, and I thought it would be something different.”

Jansson-Comer said her fiance had to get used to the idea.

“He wasn’t as thrilled as I was,” she said. “But after I talked to him a bit, he warmed up to the idea.”

Moments before they exchanged vows on Aug. 30, Comer said he thought it was a “real neat idea.”

Jansson-Comer said family members and friends who were told of their plans offered similar reactions. “They do a pause for a second and they go, ‘Oh, that’s awesome,’” she said. “It’s all been pretty positive.”

Pokey Heny, the owner of Wyoming’s last drive-in movie theater, said she quickly agreed to allow the couple to hold their wedding and reception there.

“It’s kind of fun,” Heny said as she worked the popcorn machine. “Jordan used to work for me, she was one of our earliest workers.

“When she asked me, I said, ‘Absolutely you can,’” she said.

Heny said people need to realize the American Dream is a “happening place” and a great location to hold parties and events.

Before the ceremony, the couple posed in the drive-in lot, using classic vehicles as part of the wedding theme.

The service was held in a grassy area north of the drive-in; Heny’s brother Steve Miller was married there about a decade ago. But he held his reception elsewhere; this was the first wedding reception, complete with hamburgers, hot dogs, popcorn and fountain pop at the drive-in.

Picking a flick

Choosing “The Wedding Singer,” a romantic comedy that also stars Drew Barrymore, was “a challenge,” Jansson-Comer said.

“I haven’t seen it forever,” she said. “We wanted kind of a gender-neutral movie.”

They considered both “Bridesmaids” and “Wedding Crashers,” but decided they might be a little rough for older and younger guests. Instead, they picked “something everyone could enjoy,” she said.

As they approached lay minister Billy Greaham, a classical tune was playing — before the sound of a needle ripping through a record interrupted it.

Then, Sandler’s voice sounded, and the song “Grow Old With You” was heard.

Greaham performed the service, which was, unsurprisingly, done with a sense of humor. But it was also spiritual, with Greaham reminding the couple to put Jesus Christ first in their hearts, others second and themselves third.

He also complimented Jansson, who did look stunning in a long white gown, her train brushing against the grass.

“James, you’re a lucky man,” Greaham said. “You’re a very lucky man.”

The couple beamed.

“I thought it was going to be a fun, original idea,” he said. “I’ve never been to a wedding at a drive-in — have you?”

The bride’s parents, Tom and Rita Jansson of Cowley, said they enjoyed the service.

“It was awesome,” Tom said. “I think it was so unique.”

“I loved it,” Rita said. “I think they’ll be perfect together.”

Guest Janice Bailey also offered high praise.

“What a fun thing!” she said as people headed to the drive-in for the reception. “It could have been a little warmer and sunnier, but it was great.”

After the service wrapped up, Jansson-Comer and Comer headed for his Corvette Stingray. They zipped away from the parking lot, leaving a bit of rubber on the road as they took a spin around the area.

They returned for the reception, as family and friends toasted them while the movie played in the background.

“I think it went great,” Jansson-Comer said two hours after the wedding as she chatted with friends. The couple later headed to Red Lodge, Mont., for their honeymoon.

And this was just a coming attraction of their lives together.
