For years, Mayor Scott Mangold indulged in a morning smoke.

“But on April 1, they taxed me,” Mangold said, referring to a new 60-cent federal tax on cigarettes. “And I refused to pay it.”

His comments were well received by a group of more than 150 people and three apparently government-wary watchdogs.

“Barking against taxes,” read a sign worn by one.

The folks rallied at City Hall on Wednesday to decry rapidly-growing federal deficits and seemingly unreal sums of national debt.

The event was one of many so-called “TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Parties” held across the United States, mobilized by grassroots efforts, national conservative groups and commentators. Some estimates pegged national attendance at more than 500,000 strong.

In addition to people who braved the elements on the City Hall lawn, those driving by the Powell event also seemed enthusiastic — serenading the gathering with passing honks, apparently in response to one protester’s sign reading,

“Honk for capitalism.”

The goal was to get government to listen.

“It is our right to tell our elected officials when they’ve made a mistake and tell them to fix it,” said David Kellett, a local business owner who organized the Powell party.

“Our government has no money,” said Corrine Deans. “And I want them to stop stealing mine through higher and higher taxes.”

She chastised the governor and state legislators for accepting stimulus funds.

“They went for the money instead of what we the people wanted — just saying no to spending the money,” Deans said, adding, “I will not elect any politician who does not attempt to fight this.”

Kellett said it was time to stop spending money and start paying off the $11.2-trillion national debt.

“The more we pay off our debt, the stronger and more solvent our nation becomes,” he said.

“Any wish list anyone has — they’re all going to be put on hold for a while,” said Deans.

Mangold suggested that shopping locally is part of the answer.

“If we can be more self-sufficient, it may be a buffer for what our Congress and president are about to ask us,” he said.

“It’s coming. Soon, they will ask the American people to pony up and pay off the trillions of dollars in bills that we have recently acquired.

“At the city, we are going to be facing some tough (budget) decisions, but at least we are facing them and not printing money and worrying about it later,” Mangold said.

President Barack Obama’s proposed budget for 2009 carries a $1.8-trillion deficit, according to Congressional Budget Office estimates.

The time for standing idly by has passed, said Kellett.

“We can’t be complacent anymore. We have let this go on for too long,” he said, adding that the message was not one of revolution.

“We are here because we are Americans, and we love the constitution of America,” Kellett said.

Mangold called upon the gathered citizens to get involved in government by attending meetings, talking with legislators and running for office.

“Sure, you don’t have time, but many of you can recite what happened on ‘American Idol’ or ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ from the night before,” he said.

The protest at times strayed from just-tax protestation.

Kellett’s remarks also expressed concern about infringed civil liberties, illegal immigration and smart-grid technology.

Mangold suggested that, in addition to getting politically involved, people pray for their country and leaders.

“The nice thing about prayer is they can’t tax it — yet,” he said.

However, Mangold warned that his decision to kick the nicotine habit may bring more taxes from Uncle Sam.

“If more people are like me and stop smoking, they’re going to have to tax something else,” he said.

This week, Kellett said TEA Party organizers across Wyoming are putting together a statewide organization to continue the effort and set up more events.

“We are keeping the momentum rolling,” he said.

Ultimately, Kellett said the protests will lead to change.

“I believe it will make a difference, because we are letting people know they are not standing alone, and they don’t need to be afraid of the federal government,” he said.

, as Govt. does not care what the little people want.

You will never get a true accounting from our government, politicians or the
national press, on what illegal aliens are costing US taxpayers? It spirals
into hundreds of billions of dollars. Nor will we ever know the costs to
taxpayers associated with the Stimulus spending packages. Same with illegal
immigration, owing to fact that one must hunt down financial appropriation
through the back door, by going to the Internet. Let's face it--as far as our
legislators are concerned--it's not our business? Americans have been lethargic
on a need--to--know basis? If we didn't have the web, we THE PEOPLE would never
know the expenditures of our respected politicians, hidden away on Capitol hill?
In the old days the only way to express, frustration, followed by anguish and
then finally anger was by mail or a screened phone call. It's only today that
with computer technology can we not only complain to our Senators and
Representatives, but network with thousands of other individuals, who realize
they have been manipulated by the personages on the Hill?

The Immigration
Reform and Control Act , also Simpson-Mazzoli Act (IRCA) signed by President
Ronald Reagan on November 6, 1986) is an Act of Congresswhich reformed United
States immigration law. The Act made it illegal to knowingly employ or recruit
illegal immigrants (immigrants who have not been processed and not possess
lawful work authorization), It required the business world to attest to their
employees' immigration status, and granted amnesty to certain illegal
immigrants, who had settled here continuously and who entered the United States
before January 1, 1982. The law also granted a path towards legal status to
certain immigrants and agricultural seasonal workers who had been continuously
and illegally present in the United States since January 1, 1982. It proposed
the I-9 form to ensure that all employees presented documentary proof of their
legal eligibility to accept employment in the United States, which could be
easily forged. If at all it was used by unscrupulous companies, who have two
sets of tax books anyway? It was estimated that over 2.7- 3 million individuals
were given a path to legal status from the 1983 IRCA law.
https://www.oig.lsc.gov/legis/ irca86.htm If our politicians are truly working
for the American people--THEN WHY NOT ADD AMENDMENTS TO THE (IRCA)?
In this
last decade secret committees and behind closed doors on issues, are soon
revealed by either parties clerks, contacts or staff members. Within an instant
the staff member has already emailed a friend, who has transmitted alarm to a
significant adverse organization to that policy. Immigration reform as a
paramount issue, is fomenting quietly on the back burner and will soon raise
it's ugly head again. It makes absolutely know...
WAAAH!

Waah! The mayor had to stop smoking! What a bunch of whiners - all 500,000 of
them, coast to coast.
Obama is giving a tax cut to the vast majority of working
families. I seriously doubt any of those people who turned out in Powell make
enough to have to pay more. Do these people even know what they are protesting?
Or do they just do whatever Fox "News" tells them to?
And where were
these people - and why weren't they protesting - when George Dumbya ran this
country into the ground, torturing people and spying on innocent Americans the
whole time?
This whole stupid "teabagging party" makes me weep for
America.
It's never to late

Yes, the Americans are protesting, and thank GOD we have the RIGHT to! There is
so much being done around the world to unfortunate people who happen to be
caught complaining about their government, you wouldn't believe...
Yes we have
illegal immigrants, we will ALWAYS have people trying to come to America because
WE HAVE RIGHTS. Other countries don't. As far as Taxes are concerned, we've been
protesting for MANY years, this "Tea-Party" is just a drop in the bucket
- BUT - this new Pres. MIGHT listen to concentrated effort and determined
American voices.
This isn't whining, it is standing up for what we believe to
be right. The way America was born.
