Worland, Lovell score decisive Victories

The Powell High School Panthers endured a difficult weekend as the team suffered losses of 91-60 at Worland and 55-28 at home against Lovell. The losses drop the team to 2-12 overall this season.

“This was kind of an odd week,” said Panther head coach Mike Heny, who was out of town at a conference for much of the week leading up to the games. “It was a little strange not being here for the preparation for the games and then being on the bench to coach."

Things also looked a little odd for the Panthers on their stat sheet on Friday night in Worland. Powell finished with five players in double figures — usually the sign of a positive game outcome — but were unable to hold pace.

“That’s the sort of team Worland is,” said Heny. “They love to run the floor and fire up shots and we didn’t do enough to slow them down or take care of the basketball.”

Billy Harshman, David Starcevich and A.J. Anderson each finished with 11 points in the contest. Josh Cragoe and Chase Partridge both added 10 points.

The Panthers struggled with 23 turnovers in the game. The team also finished with just 12 defensive and 24 overall rebounds.

On Saturday, the Panthers stayed close to Lovell for more than a quarter, but watched as they were unable to hit a shot from the floor throughout the second period as the team slipped behind at intermission.

For the night, Powell connected on just six of their 36 shots from the floor. Anderson’s seven points led the way for Powell from the floor.

“We were getting penetration, but a lot of times we were taking the ball inside too far,” said Heny. “We got so far under that we didn’t have any space to pass the ball against their big guys. We need to understand that we need some spacing against a bigger team like that.”

Things get no easier this week as the Panthers hit the road for games at 3A West frontrunners Jackson and Pinedale.

“It’ll be a tough week for us,” said Heny. “We’ll need to play at our best.”
