Mended Avenue E fence exemplifies spirit of volunteerism Print E-mail
Written by Tessa Schweigert    Tuesday, September 08, 2009

It’s been said that good fences make good neighbors. It turns out that neighbors make good fences, too.

After months of seeing the dilapidated fence on Avenue E near their church, a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints congregation decided to do something about it. The fence’s prominent position on a main entryway into Powell made it a widely-recognized and criticized eyesore.

Church members young and old recently spent hours in the hot sun, tearing down the broken structure and rebuilding it. Olson Fencing crews donated their time and labor to set all the posts, making sure the mended fence will stand strong in the wind. Homeowners from Whispering Pines subdivision showed their enthusiastic support for the project and lent a hand or a much-appreciated refreshment.

The restoration project illustrates the Powell community’s spirit of volunteerism.

Gib Condie, who spearheaded the church’s effort, said it’s simply what Powell folks do. When there’s a fire or car crash, volunteer firemen respond. When uninsured patients needed medical care, local residents organized the Heart Mountain Volunteer Medical Clinic. Basically, if there’s a wrecked situation, the community finds a way to help make things right.

We appreciate the time, labor and spirit of local residents who remedied the Avenue E fence. Their commitment as neighbors makes Powell a better community.

The church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints wants to be good neighbours and
live the commandments to love you neighbour as yourself. Yet there are those in
the world who want to destroy this church because they don't agree with the
doctrines it teaches. If you don't believe as we do, so be it but leave those
of us who have a testimony of the gospel and want to follow Jesus Christ in our
way alone. We are taught that everyone has the right to worship whom, what or
where they please. We just ask for the same privilege.
