Written by Randal Horobik    Thursday, January 28, 2010

NWC Men’s basketball earns Top 25 votes as well

The Northwest College wrestling team climbed one space in the first NJCAA wrestling poll of 2010. Head coach Jim Zeigler’s crew now sits fourth among junior college wrestling programs.

The three teams ahead of Northwest remain unchanged. Iowa Central remains at the head of the class, followed by St. Louis-Meramec and North Idaho. The Trappers jumped ahead of Labette, which slid to fifth in the standings, despite dropping a dual to the Grizzlies earlier this month.

Written by CJ Baker    Tuesday, January 26, 2010

The Smith Mansion in Wapiti Valley, built by the late Francis Lee Smith, may soon undergo renovation. Smith's daughter, Sunny Larsen Smith, is looking for volunteers to help her clean up and restore the towering structure, which has fallen into disrepair.Tribune photo by Carla Wensky

"It’s pretty much just trashed at this point.”

Sunny Smith Larsen is leading an impromptu January tour of the home her father built west of Wapiti — the 75-foot-high Smith Mansion, or, as it’s also known, “The Crazy House.”

Smith Larsen, who grew up in the home, is organizing an effort to restore and preserve the site, which has been repeatedly damaged by vanadals and the elements over the years.

Sugar beet grower: Court ruling could cripple sugar industry
Written by Judy Killen    Tuesday, January 26, 2010

A Powell-area sugar beet grower says a potential ban on planting or processing Roundup Ready sugar beets is a “critical” event that could cripple the U.S. sugar industry along with local economies.

“It’s the kind of thing that could just shut down the sugar beet industry,” said Fred Hopkin of last week’s federal court filing seeking an injunction against planting, cultivating, processing or any other use of Roundup Ready sugar beets.

At the end of the third quarter in Friday’s basketball game between the Powell Lady Panthers and the Cody Fillies, the announcer declared “Ladies and gentlemen, we have the winner...”

The emcee was actually referring to an ongoing silent auction, but he might just as well have been speaking about the basketball game.

Riding a dominant 23-point third period, the hosting Lady Panthers (10-2 overall, 4-2 in Class 3A West) took down the Fillies (11-3, 4-2) in a 55-28 decision.

Panthers roll seven on the mat
Written by Don Amend    Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Seven teams tested the Powell Panther wrestlers last week, and all seven went down in defeat.

The victims included five Eastern Region opponents, including Douglas, which last week was rated No. 1 in 3A wrestling, as well as the top-ranked 2A squad from Greybull/Riverside.

The 7-0 string began on Thursday with a 49-18 win over Greybull/Riverside in Basin. Monte Nickles opened the dual by coming from behind to take a one-point win over G/R’s Bob Anderson. Anderson dominated early and led 6-1 going into the third period before Nickles executed a takedown and a near fall to tie the score at six. He chose to give up a point and go back to the neutral position, and in the closing seconds, scored another takedown for the 8-7 win.

Frozen beets become winter feed
Written by Judy Killen    Thursday, January 21, 2010

Beets not making way to factory become livestock fodder

Big Horn Basin sugar beets that never made it to the factory are turning into winter livestock fodder.

Local Western Sugar Cooperative beet growers are feeding both sheep and cattle on beets that remain in the ground in the Lovell factory district, where about 30 percent of the 2009 crop was not harvested.

Regan Smith feeds both cattle and sheep on his sugar beets. They are doing well, he said.
